A Non-Binary Title is an alternative to Miss,Mrs, Ms or Mr. It represents people who do not fit a specific gender binary and gives them an identity.
  • Since 2011 Australia allows non-binary and intersex people to get passsports with the non-binary gender marker X.

     

  • Concept of non-binary gender has been recorded in the western hemisphere from as early as 19th century.

     

  • In other cultures non-binary people are named as "two spirit", people in Native American Cultures, Hijira in South Asia and Bissu among the Buginese people of Indonesia.

     

  • In 2009 The Australian Human Rights Commission released Sex Files: The legal recognition of sex in documents  and government records. It was recommended by the commission that the Australian government consider national guidelines concerning the collection of sex and gender information from individuals (Aust Govt, 2013).

     

  • The Sex Discrimination Amendment (sexual orientation, Gender Identity and Intersex Status) Act 2013 was passed by parliment on the 25th June 2013. The Amendment Act amends the Sex Discrimination act of 1984. Therefore people who feel discriminated against on a range of issues such as sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status and relationship status will be able to make complaints to the Human Rights Commission (Aust Govt, 2013).

Mx honorific is being added to the Oxford English Dictionary. 2015.
