Human Rights
and
Gender Identity
Gender minorities have the same human rights that everyone is entitled to. These rights can include freedom of expression and freedom from discrimination. Sometimes, there are people who misunderstand the concept of gender minorities because there is simply not much awareness within society.
Gender identity is an important aspect to freely express oneself, and without alternatives to the gender identities such as male and female, people may feel excluded from society and may cause participation issues to those who don’t fit within the the gender structure society presents. A major problem that gender minorities face is that there are many who discriminate and are predjudice, this could either be intentional or unknowingly discrimination.
Most surveys are suited to cisgender (non-transgender) individuals and fail to take consideration of transgender or intersex people, leading to subtle discriminination. The rights of those who do not fit within the binary of male or female are infringed upon when they are not able to express themselves as the majority would. Gender and sexual minorities are also subjected to hate crimes, with certain studies showing that 50% of the LGBT+ community have experienced hate speech or hate crime against them.
Sexual and gender minorities also face challenges when they are trying to adopt or retain custody of children, this especially applies to trangender and intersex people. The video below gives insight on the type of struggles that the LBGT+ community are faced with across the world.
